Have you ever wanted to know how a principal gets their position? The focus of my article is about the life of the principals who work in our building and how they got here. A lot of people don’t know what goes on with our principals and what they go through to get in these positions. Lisa Votaw is the head principal of Aiken New Tech High School. She is a wonderful principal with her
understanding of others and is a great role model to people who want to be in her position as a principal. Votaw says, “without learning there is no hope and without hope there is no learning”.
Here is a little background information on her. Votaw started as an English teacher at Aiken in 1991. Soon after she was transferred to Walnut Hills to be an Assistant Principal. A promotion in the principal position took her to Winton Woods School District for three years and then she got yet another promotion and returned to Aiken as Head Principal.
Let’s take a turn to one of our Assistant Principals, Steve Barton. This is Barton’s second year as an Assistant Principal (AP). Before getting promoted and being AP, he took his career into being a band director, taking all his band’s kids and making appearances and doing band competitions. He started as a band director until he got promoted to Assistant Principal. This is his second year now and he is doing a great job and being a great role model. Both principals are great role models to the Aiken community. With their passionate ways of learning and making sure everyone who comes in the building feels safe and welcome. I love both principals and have a great relationship with both of them. In the future I hope the same kids will have a great relationship with them like I do and I want to
make a change on how kids look at principals. In reality they love all the kids who go here.
