No, not TikTok ! Joe Biden is threatening to ban our favorite social media streaming app. TikTok is our most famous social media platform we have in today’s society; everyone loves TikTok.
On April 24, 2024 President Joe Biden signed a law stating that if the Chinese owned app was not sold within a year it would be banned. But why TikTok ? TikTok is a really good app; we use TikTok for a lot of things such as researching things (wanting to learn about things), people dance (people love dancing), people get on there to express themselves, people get on there to get justice for their loved ones (spread the awareness and spread the word), people get on there to meet new people, and most importantly making content is a passion to some people and some people make a living off a TikTok— like it is some people’s main source of income. TikTok is a very addictive app but in a good way! We get on TikTok when we are bored and we end up scrolling for hours at a time.
I do not agree with the TikTok ban but I am going to tell you why TikTok could be bad for you. TikTok could be bad for little kids who do not know any better, influencing them to do bad things. TikTok has brainwashed people and kids into believing in bad things and therefore the U.S will take into consideration of it being a threat to society that could possibly turn into a nationwide ban.
TikTok has until January 19, 2025 to sell the app. If they do not succeed at selling the app it will no longer be available in the US (CNN) . The US feels as if the app is a security risk to the Americans and that China could be spying on us through TikTok because the company is based in China (NPR).
I chose to speak about this topic because I just do not think it is right that they are trying to ban this app. This app is a really nice app and I think the federal government is upset at the fact that China is able to run a powerful app and they have no control over it. Older adults who are kind of in the middle just don’t really care as much. “I’m not worried about it. I don’t really use it, and I feel like if they ban it, something else will just take its place,” said Mr. Neville, the Digital Arts teacher at Aiken High School. Meanwhile the younger people are going to miss it and be upset that it is leaving. “I’m gonna be salty and I know other people will be too, but it kind of is needed,” said a student. In my opinion, this topic is really important because like I said before this app is where people make their money. If they take this app away people will lose a lot of money, things could happen such as people who have no experience in other things, and no other education and all
they have is a TikTok income. What will happen to them if this app gets banned? In conclusion , let’s just say that I hope that we do not come to a nationwide ban of TikTok .
