In an exciting and innovative approach to education, high school students at Aiken New Tech High School are taking their love for amusement parks to the next level by designing and building their very own roller coasters as part off their Engineering and Environmental Science classes. This unique project is not only thrilling but also serves as a captivating way to inspire the next generation of engineers, designers, roller coaster enthusiasts.
With a focus on practical application and hands-on learning, the project is providing these students with the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world setting. Under the guidance of their teachers, Ms. Rockett and Mrs. Wilhelmus, students are putting their creativity, problem-solving skills, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) abilities to the test while also competing in a “friendly” competition.
Throughout the projects, the students have been working diligently on their coaster designs, conducting research, and collaborating in teams to bring their visions to life. The classrooms have been transformed into a miniature engineering workshop, complete with multiple roller coasters all around the room.
Mrs. Rockett and Mrs. Wilhelmus, the teachers behind this unique project, believe that it is important to provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge in practical ways. As the roller coasters at Aiken New Tech High School near completion, the students are not only engineering thrilling rides but also creating unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the world of STEM. Their roller coaster journey is a testament to the power of hands-on learning in inspiring the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.
